My obsession with Lighthouses began in 1993 at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina. It was winter on our first trip and the lighthouse was therefore closed for tours. I was finally able to climb the tower the following summer. A year later I moved to Miami, FL where I eventually became involved in native plant restoration at the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. I soon learned that the lighthouse was being reopened to the public and they needed tourguides. The rest, as they say, is "history"!!! Since that time I have been lucky enough to see approximately 12 of Florida's 30 lighthouses in addition to all the lighthouses on the Outer Banks.
In August of 2001, while preparing for my usual tour, I happened across a scrapbook in the Park office. It contained newspaper articles and pictures on the lighthouse and park in general from 1975 to 1985. When I asked (ok - begged!) the park to allow me to borrow and copy them, it was also mentioned that there might be a few other pictures I would be interested in. A week later, while on vacation, I spent three glorious days sorting thru many, many binders of newspaper articles and photos. I was able to scan 100+ articles and 70+ photos pertaining directly to the lighthouse, in addition to several archeological surveys. Almost 30 years of history had been dropped in my lap!! You have never seen a lighthouse nut in such heaven!! Now I need to read through all the articles and organize the information into some sort of database, as well as adding more info to this site.
